It's not anything specific to the Cool VL Viewer (you can also enable FMOD, which provides a much better sound quality, in other viewers), and *yes* there *is* a problem with your sound daemon and/or driver settings... You should try to get rid of Alsa and of all sound daemons and install OSS v4 in their place (OSS got a transparent mixer that saves you the hassle of having to deal with multiple and mutually incompatible sound daemons)...
