So it rather looks to me as if there is a problem unrelated to Cool VL Viewer. Could it be server-side?
Yes, it probably is (that sim is on RC Magnum server channel). I am able to reproduce the problem with LL's viewer (v3.8.1, dating from July 2015 and today's v3.8.6 are affected): you should create a JIRA issue for LL's viewer itself...

I created a ticket for this issue, and it has been closed as "expected behaviour" with this comment:

Grumpity Linden commented on BUG-10602:
---------------------------------------
The most recent simulator update contains a fix that addresses an exploit which allowed creating elaborate assets with 1LI and 10L$ upload cost. These corrupt assets could only be made intentionally, and this fix closes the loophole that made them appear valid.

So, clearly, this isn't a Cool VL Viewer bug.

When I tested in Firestorm, which I rarely use, the buildings continued to rezz correctly, until I flushed my cache, when (as I expected), the buildings all turned into apples. Which suggests the server fix is blocking the loading of the sculpt maps of these "corrupt" objects. Intriguing...

And of course, Lindens don't deem necessary to warn TPV developers about such breakages, causing them to loose their time hunting down non-existent bugs... How nice of them !
