I have been using 1.29.0 this weekend and things have seemed mostly normal. I did notice when in a sunny, open location that my avatar was no longer casting a shadow. Well not entirely true, some attachments were (sculpts and other regular prims seem to). I have also noticed, but don't know if it's related, that I have manually force a rebake to get the materials on the body to show properly after login. My tests were with both official, Linux builds for 1.29.0.0 and 1.28.2.64, with the same settings for ALM, shaows and reflections. Tests were with a regular parcel/region environment day, not forced to noon or anything. I have added a couple of images and can provide logs as needed.

Rigged mesh shadows rendering indeed seems missing entirely... I will investigate.

Did you try with LL's performance viewer to see if it is missing there too ?

I just downloaded and installed it. Doesn't work so well in Wine (I get various errors and warnings about version checks and such). I did get it to run enough and rigged mesh shadows do show.

OK, found the bugs that prevented rigged mesh shadows rendering (there were several) and fixed them for next release. Thanks for the report !

Without a log, I am not sure about the materials issue (it could simply be a race condition in the material requests on login: watch your log file for material errors), or because they were improperly referenced due to the lack of a proper texture binding in the missing shaders...

Thanks for the update, regarding the shadows. While I was testing the shadows in the Windows performance viewer, the same materials issue was evident. I don't think it is a Cool VL Viewer issue, specifically. I'm going to search JIRA and see if anyone has reported it there.
