one of the places that my wife dragged me to last night and that made me border on swapping was the FLTO winterfest... and it wasn't exactly busy there, i blame textures on builds, not avatars...

I went to the "FTLO Ice Fest" (this is the closest I found to "FLTO Winterfest") and moved around the sim, even flying around to be sure to rez all objects, then landed close to the center of the sim, with draw distance set to 256m and all other graphic settings maxed out (with the exception of Sky, set to Low, since the only noticeable difference between Low and High sky is a drop in FPS). There were 10 avatars in the sim (mine included), and I waited there several minutes (around 10), then looked at the memory usage: 900Mb

See the attached screen capture if you don't believe me...

EDIT: waited 10 more minutes. Here is the new screen capture, with only 830Mb used (and 12 avatars around)... I also expanded the textures stats in the stats floater and as you can see, it's all good (less than 320Mb of decoded textures for around 2500 known textures in sim).

jikes.
i don't get it. I just went back to a few places that sent me swapping yesterday, and today everything's fine with maybe 650MB used.

btw, 96fps??? with everything except sky detail maxed and 256m draw distance? what kind of hardware are you running on?

A Core2 Quad Q6600 CPU overclocked to 3.4GHz, a Nvidia GTX460 (but I got the same frame rates with my former 8800GT since the bottleneck for the viewer rendering engine is at the CPU level), 4Gb of DDR2 SDRAM (in dual channel configuration), under Linux 2.6.35.9 (32bits) and a Mandriva 2010.0 distro (Mandriva runs faster than most distros, Gentoo excepted, because it is compiled for i586 CPUs instead of i386 for most other distros).

96fps is by far not my highest rates. In a skybox, I can reach up to 130fps. I hardly ever drop below 20fps, even in crowded sims.

gtx460, quad core... ok i'm on a core2 duo laptop with geforce 9400, fat chance of getting that kind of performance.

The GTX460 won't make a difference with anything equal to or better than a 8800GT. The fact the CPU is a Quad Core instead of a Duo won't make a difference either (since the viewer only uses one core to render, and occasionally another core to decode textures), but what makes a huge difference is the CPU frequency.
