Multiple crashes

Hi,
I recently moved to the version specified below, having been very happy with the 1.23 previous version, and not experienced a crash with that version for years, not indeed any major issues.
I only switched to this version because your main page says that the 1.23 path would not be supported after the end of the year.
Previously, I'd never installed a Snowglobe version and so this is the first time I've used it.

Since moving to this version last week, I've encountered multiple crashes. 4 or 5 in the past few hours alone.
There appears to be no linking issue. Earlier today I was changing the appearance of some objects by changing their textures etc... and I kept crashing. I cleared my cache and that seemed to work for a while, but I've just teleported and crashed within seconds of arrival.
Also, I've found that this version quite flaky in ways that the 1.23 version wasn't:

1. Some textures refuse to load properly and are blurry. Re-logging usually cure this.
2. The viewer seems much more laggy and prone to freezes than the previous version. Almost every time I click on something, it freezes and I can't move for a few seconds.

Anyway, here are my details. I've searched high and low for the "stack_trace.log" file that's mentioned in the Rules, but I can't find it. I've done a global search on my computer and found nothing, so attached is info from SL Help and my secondlife.log file. Thanks

EDIT - Erm, I can't upload my Second Life log, because it's bigger than 64 KB and your site won't allow uploads any bigger than that! Which bits are required please? Perhaps a note of clarification in the Rules would be useful?

Oh Dear!
Just tried to log-in - Crash within 5 seconds.
Re-logged. Same issue.
In that time, the SecondLife.log was up to 147KB each log-n, so still not sure how I'm supposed to upload that.....

Are you sure you installed the viewer properly ? Please, see the installation Howto.

In any case, I do need the SecondLife.log (zip it before posting it to reduce its size)...

Hi Henri, thanks for the reply.

Doh! I'm a goose! I forgot about the zip option!
Log attached.

Today, I've uninstalled everything related to SL and cleaned up the registry using CCleaner.
I've re-installed according to the instructions on your link (which method I did use before).

Thanks again.
:D

Your crash is apparently due to a corrupted texture. Here are the relevant log lines:

Code:
2010-12-04T19:06:09Z WARNING: LLViewerImage::doLoadedCallbacks: mRawImage is NULL for d2114404-dd59-4a4d-8e6c-49359e91bbf0
2010-12-04T19:06:10Z ../../newview/llviewerimage.cpp(1214) : error
2010-12-04T19:06:10Z ERROR: LLViewerImage::updateFetch: ASSERT (mRawImage.notNull() || (!mNeedsCreateTexture && !mIsRawImageValid))

The viewer gives up and crashes voluntarily (this is the purpose of the ASSERT directive), because it could apparently not decode the texture (which UUID is: d2114404-dd59-4a4d-8e6c-49359e91bbf0) and doesn't know what to do next.

I'll have a look at the code and see if there is a better solution than to just give up and crash, but this issue should also affect Snowglobe, and not only the Cool VL Viewer...

Also, give a try at the Cool Viewer v1.25.0.16 (today's release): it could solve your slowly loading textures issue...

Thanks Henri.
Is there any way that you know of to find a texture by UUID?
What can cause a texture to become corrupted?

I've just installed Cool Viewer v1.25.0.16 so I'll see how I get on!

Thanks again.

Well, that didn't last long!
Crashed again. I was just about to teleport.
As I've said, I've never used Snowglobe before so I don't know if this issue happens in Snowglobe without the Cool VL Viewer.

Oh Dear!
Re-logged, attempted the same teleport again. This time I arrived at the destination and managed to last about 10 seconds before crashing again.

It's a shame, I've loved the Cool VL Viewer, but SL is now totally unuseable for me. Whether it's a Snowglobe issue or not, I'll have to find an alternative if there's no resolution to this.

This looks like a different issue this time... Are you sure your hard disk is not dying ?... It's like if the viewer failed to read its cache. Here you got:

Code:
2010-12-05T16:07:02Z WARNING: LLTextureCacheRemoteWorker::doRead: Error reading file from local cache: C:\Program Files\Snowglobe\skins\default\textures\8a515889-eac9-fb55-8eba-d2dc09eb32c8.j2c Bytes: 130810 Offset: 32768 / 130810
A corrupted filesystem would explain those crashes that nobody else is experiencing...

Henri,
Thanks for the tip.
I'll check out my hard drive.

Could a bad network connection cause these issues too?
I have had problems with my service provider (which they promised had been fixed).

I've just logged out after being inworld for over 2 hours with no crashing, yet the log has quite a few "Error reading file from local cache:" so presumably these errors don't always generate a crash of the viewer?

It does seem a huge co-incidence that my hard drive should start to fail just as I install Snowglobe + Cool VL Viewer, but not impossible I suppose.

I'll check my hard drive and then revert to another viewer to see if the same issue occurs.

Thanks

Nicola
