Using either stable or experimental windows versions of current or prior viewers, there is a font visibility problem with the newer AMD Catalyst 12.10 drivers. This problem is non-existent in the official viewer or Firestorm.

Edit: My apologies Henri, I am attaching the log file.

My Girlfriends Dell Studio Laptop encountered this issue recently (2 weeks ago) as well. We performed an upgrade on her ATI video drivers to the most current for her ATI Mobile 5400 and the exact thing you show occurred. We stepped back to the previous ATI driver and all was well. There is a number of reports @ ATI/AMD seems their driver has affected other things as well not just the viewer's we use. We did check with Dell first to see if they had updated drivers but typically Dell only issues updates for their stuff for one yr, after that you have to go to source anyways.

Hope it helps

You are absolutely correct WhiteStar.. before I "upgraded" to the 12.10 driver set, I had never had this problem with Henri's viewer, stable or experimental, and I had been using the 12.8 driver for quite some time. I was just making sure that Henri was privy to this problem, since I mentioned it was non-existent in the official viewer or Firestorm.

Please do not misunderstand me however.. I would *much* rather prefer to use Henri's viewer, because of how blazing fast texture loading and resolution is, compared to the blatant bandwidth c0ckblock found in Firestorm or the official viewer.

There is nothing wrong in the log and yes, it's a graphics driver bug... The fact that you don't see it happening with some other viewers is just because they use different fonts.

As a possible work around, you could delete or rename the "fonts" sub-directory of the Cool VL Viewer installation, which will force the viewer to use the system fonts instead. But if I were you, I would simply "downgrade" to the last, non-buggy graphics drivers and report the bug to ATI (Alas their support is so abyssal that your bug report might fall into deaf ears... That's the very reason why I only buy NVIDIA nowadays).

Ty for the suggestion about the fonts Henri, unfortunately it did not work. I will be reverting back to the 12.8 driver set.

Fixed. Sort of. :)

Basic information: the problem is not fixed with the 12.8 or 12.9 for me, as I use Kernel 3.6.6, and those ATI Drivers don't work with them without heavy patching. So I need to use 12.10 or newer.

I had the same problem with 12.10. Solution is to use the 12.11 beta driver from the ATI site, which works with the fonts again (I removed the fonts folder, so it uses the systems fonts). The driver is faster than 12.10 even, rezzing works far faster on my Lenovo E135 with AMD E-1800.

About the watermark (AMD puts a watermark into all their beta drivers which are quite annoying), put this here:

Code:
9777c589791007f4aeef06c922ad54a2:ae59f5b9572136d99fdd36f0109d358fa643f2bd4a2644d9efbb4fe91a9f6590a145:f612f0b01f2565cd9bd834f8119b309bae11a1ed4a2661c49fdf3fad11986cc4f641f1ba1f2265909a8e34ff1699309bf211a7eb4d7662cd9f8e3faf14986d92f646f1bc

into /etc/ati/signature. After logging in and out it is gone.

In general, updating to the 12.11 beta is in my opinion better than downgrading to 12.8 or 12.9, as these are more faulty and slower, a sit seems. I had so far no instabilities with the 12.11 beta.

Hope it helps, Xe.
