Mac version of Cool VL Viewer: bad news…

Since Kathrine seems to have stopped doing Mac builds of Cool VL Viewer, and since I finally got a newer Mac, I decided to try to build Cool VL Viewer on it. It failed right out of the box, saying there wasn't any 10.6 SDK on the machine. I asked a friend who is much more skilled for programming than I'll ever be to help. He tried, and finally gave up: my Mac has the latest Mac OS X installed (10.9, a.k.a Mavericks), and there doesn't seem to be any way to install a working 10.6 SDK on it. He apparently succeeded to get one, but it was unusable: nothing would compile against it.

So for now, it seems to be dead, unless someone with a Mac with a previous version of Mac OS can give it a try. :(

So I'm stuck with Singularity now. It's impressive to see how Henri got everything right when you try to use another viewer (I had forgotten how awkward it was to have to open the chat window to change your group tag, or how annoying it is to have the escape key resetting your view…).

IIRC, you need the 10.5 SDK and gcc v4.2...

Viewers' (not just Cool VL Viewer's) Mac builds are a nightmare: LL recently changed the code to try and get rid of the old Carbon API dependency that is no more available in newer SDKs, but this badly broke Mac builds (LL viewers and v3-based TPVs are affected). The Cool VL Viewer can be built with the 10.5 SDK, but that's an interim period, till LL gets things right in their code so that I could backport it.

As for Kathrine, I don't think she gave up, but she's a "busy girl"... and since she's now using PCs more than Macs, she's probably not very motivated to produce Mac builds on a regular basis. I'll point her to your post, since she will be more helpful than myself for Mac stuff.

It used to be the 10.5 some time ago, but apparently, they switched to the 10.6 one. At least, that's what Kathrine says here: https://bitbucket.org/kjansma/cool-vl-viewer-osx
With the 10.5 SDK, I would have succeeded to built the new versions on Cool VL Viewer on my former Mac, which I tried and couldn't do (didn't try very hard though, hard to go very far when you're following build instructions like a cooking recipe without understanding what you're doing… ;) ).
Let's hope LL will finally figure out how to switch to a newer SDK (10.6 is pretty old now, especially by Apple's standards). Or I might upgrade my older Mac to 10.6 and give it another try; might work out of the box for once.

Hi all,

there's a new version up (1.26.10.13), at the usual place. Sorry for taking so long to build a fresh one.

Thank you Katherine!

I just tried it out on 10.9.2 and it works great.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot! :) Of course, it has to be when my new iMac is gone for repair… *facepalms* Apple hardware is no more what it used to be…
I'll test it as soon as I get my iMac back.

I just installed Katherine's 1.26.10.13 build, and so far it works fine. I was running 1.26.4.94 because my iMac is a bit elderly, so this change was a fairly big jump, and I was a bit nervous about it. Imagine my delight when I found that I'm getting substantially improved frame-rates with the same graphics settings. Thank you Cool VL Viewer, and above all, thank you Henri for your rocking viewer.

Edit: It seems I spoke too soon. 1.26.10.13 works great for me... until I hit a location with lots of mesh. Then my viewer practically grinds to a halt with frame-rates as low as 1FPS... I'm sure it's not the viewer's fault though; just my lack of graphics horsepower.
