In today's releases (v1.26.8.69 and v1.26.12.11), I implemented a new feature: the "Sounds List" floater.
This floater (toggled via the "View" -> "Sounds List" menu entry) lists all the sounds that are playing or were played by all currently existing sound sources (with the exceptions of the UI sounds and sounds triggered by the Physics engine, such as collision, sliding and rolling sounds of physical objects on surfaces, which are filtered out from the list on purpose to avoid cluttering it).
It entitles you to play locally (in the viewer only) each sound to identify it, to easily spot sound sources (double-clicking on a line would enable a tracker on the object associated with the source, if any, and the "Show" button would focus your camera on that object), to block any sound asset from playing, mute the associated object, or sound-mute the owner of the sound source.
For now, the asset sound block action is only extending over the current viewer session, and I'm still debating whether it's useful or not to implement a blacklisting that would persist over sessions; most "annoying" sounds result from their usage (if this usage is associated with a particular object or owner, then you are better off muting that object or sound-muting the owner), not from what they are, and there may be non-annoying usages of the same sound, so blocking it persistently might be an overkill... Let me know what you think about it.
Do make sure to read the tool-tips in that floater (especially the tool-tips associated with the list columns header), to get a full grasp of its features and working.

In today's releases, the sounds list has been further improved: - The "step on land" sound was added to the list of ignored, Physics-engine originated sounds.
- As long as it got an origin/position, it is now possible to track a sound source, even when not corresponding/linked to an object's position.
- Added a selected source beacon feature: when a source is selected in the list, and its not an ambient (origin/position-less) sound, an orange-ish (to distinguish it from other sound beacons highlighted via the Beacons floater, which are yellow) sound beacon is drawn at the source's position. Note that the selected sound beacon is independent from the tracker arrow beacon; i.e. you can both track a source (by double-clicking on its line in the list), and highlight another with the beacon (by simply selecting its line in the list).
