I will not revert to the overlay system. Period.

well, is there a way to run that installer completely non-interactive, and without X?

When i tried following the instructions that it gave me with --help it was waiting for me to enter "yes"... without actually telling me that it was waiting for something 0.o

Yes, with: --mode silent

Show a dialog on the console asking interactively for the needed parameters.
Code:
./CoolVLViewer-1.26.2.4-Linux-x86-Setup2 --mode console

Do an unattended install using parameters from a response file.
Code:
./CoolVLViewer-1.26.2.4-Linux-x86-Setup2 --mode silent --response-file responses.txt

Create such a response file, saving (almost) all parameters.
Code:
./CoolVLViewer-1.26.2.4-Linux-x86-Setup2 --save-response-file responses.txt

Unfortunately neither mode is currently aware of a local Snowglobe file. They always trigger a download.

This has already been worked out for the next releases. The installer will:
  • Automatically look for a Snowglobe archive in your home directory and use it if found there.
  • Save any Snowglobe archive location that you specified with the dialog (whenever it is not your home directory) and use that on latter installations, if it can still find the archive there.

Thank you Henri, the installer in 1.26.0.27 / 1.26.2.5 now successfully drops the file ~/.Snowglobe-i686-1.4.2.3626.archivedir to remember the last used Snowglobe archive directory. This will ease the use for people who click through the GUI installer.

I'm afraid that this is not exactly the issue I indended to point out and I'll try to explain more in detail this time:
  • --mode console neither asks for, nor writes a Snowglobe archive path to the archivedir file.
  • --save-response-file does not save the path of Snowglobe archive into the response file.
See my previous post for example invokations.

It would be a great help to have those two points implemented for complete command line usage and automation.

When I made the installer (which is primarily a graphic one) I didn't really pay much attention to the command line usage and no attention at all to the console installation. The next releases will add a --snowglobe option to specify the Snowglobe archive directory (which will also be appended to the response file, though I could not so far make the installer successfully read from a response file for a console install... Probably a bug in InstallJammer itself) and the console installation will properly prompt for that directory too, and issue the various intermediary reports about what's going on during the installation process.

Yes, maybe an InstallJammer bug, I've got the same issue on my system. Too bad that the InstallJammer project seems to be discontinued. But it's not so much trouble anymore now that we've got command line options for the two most important settings. (Snowglobedir and Destination)
Thank you very much for that.

I've been playing around with silent install and noticed something:
Whenever there are files for remembered settings in ~/.secondlife, they take priority over command line options. Usually command line options should override remembered settings.
A user who doesn't know about the hidden settings files in ~/.secondlife might execute this:
Code:
CoolVLViewer-1.26.2.6-Linux-x86-Setup --mode silent --snowglobe ~/newsnow --destination ~/newdest

and be confused why the installer won't use the new directories but instead use those it remembered from a previous manual install.

It is not... It's just not maintained any more by its original author, but v1.3.0 was released after the latter "abandoned" the project at v1.2...

This will be fixed in next release.
