Hi there!

I just got aware of the possibility to choose texture for a prim temporarily from the local drive which saves a lot of Lindens while testing.

Unfortunately when I'm in edit mode , selected the texture (face), clicked on the texture to load a new one and then select local, that field stays empty and doesn't show any pictures. Do these have to be in a very specific folder on my hard drive? I don't get any chance to navigate through my hard drive.

Thanks in advance!

After selecting the "Local" radio button on the bottom right, the "Add", "Remove" and "Upload" buttons appear on the left.

Use "Add" to add a local texture present on your computer storage (a file selector will then appear). The chosen file(s) will then appear on the right, in the list of local textures: you may then click on their name and "Select" to apply to the face(s).

The "Remove" button is for removing a local texture from the list.

"Upload" can be used to upload the selected texture in the list, once you are satisfied with it. Do not forget to apply the newly uploaded texture in place of the local texture however (this is not automatic).

A trap I have discovered is that local textures do not appear to be picked up by Baked On Mesh (BOM). In the past I have used local textures when making alpha masks, incrementally tweaking the texture with GIMP on my computer and exporting it to the .tga file that the viewer is reading (this is not entirely 'safe' because the same file is being accessed by two independent applications at the same time, which can cause a crash, but it mostly works). However if the alpha mask is being applied to a mesh body using BOM, local textures just don't get picked up at all. Even after I save the alpha and exit from the Appearance editor, the alpha appears as a blank grey surface on the avatar.

Even once I have uploaded the alpha texture to my inventory, and applied it to the alpha on my avatar, the effect does not become visible until I have saved the change, exited from the Appearance editor, and waited for my avatar to be rebaked.

All of this makes developing alpha masks for my mesh avatar far more painful than on my legacy avatar. Why might I want to do this, you might ask? So that I can continue to wear mesh clothes that were developed before my mesh body.

BoM did not exist in when local textures were implemented, and since the baking now happens server-side in SL, they cannot be used either for BoM...

This is the "expected behaviour"...

You still can upload your BoM textures/alpha masks on Aditi for free to test them before uploading them on the main grid.
