When working very closely with a build, the yellow/blue highlighting on the prims you have selected may get in the way, making it more difficult to work on the small details. And on the flipside, when selecting many prims/objects (a few hundred prims) the viewer becomes very laggy. Would it be possible to provide a way to reduce the detail level of the highlighting (just thin solid lines, rather than the fading effect) or to hide it altogether? I'd actually prefer a way to do both.

In the "Tools" menu, you may disable "Show Hidden Selection" which reduces a great deal the number of selection lines around prims.

Tried that option, didn't do anything
