Is there a way to unlock an object once it has been locked?

The same way you locked it. Just edit the object and then click the "Locked" checkbox again.

That of course only works if it is your own object and you yourself locked it.

What do you mean by "locked object" ?...

If it's about Edit-locked objects that are rezzed in-world, simply edit the object (right click on it and choose "Edit" in the pie menu), then in the Edit floater, select the "Object" tab and un-check the "Locked" box.

If you are speaking about RestrainedLove locked attachments, then you need to have a look at the documentation of the scripted object that is responsible for the locking (this may not be the locked object itself: an attachment can lock other attachments on your avatar). To find out which objects are locked or locked others, use the "Advanced" -> "RestrainedLove" -> "Restrictions list" floater and look for objects in the list with a "detach" restriction.

I mean Edit-locked. I right clicked and chose "Edit", then chose the "Object" tab but the whole tab is greyed out and I can't uncheck the "Locked" box.

This is really, really weird. I'm finding scripts in object that should not have scripts in them. Here's as example a prim that I created for the floor of a skybox has a script in it, and I can't delete the script or unlock the prim. All of the objects that I can't unlock have scripts in them that don't belong there. In my skybox stable the floor has horse scripts in them.

Do you own the object? If I remember this correctly, then you can only unlock if you own the object.

Yes, you must own the object. Also, make sure only the locked object is selected.
