suggestion:
there's this GPL'ed openGL planetarium app called celestia, runs on win, mac and linux, and it does seamless openGL capturing to ogg video files.

You're a little late, here... The "make movie" feature was removed from the v1.20 version of the viewer, many months ago... Not sure what the SL movie makers are using, but there seem to be efficient alternatives to this seldom used feature (if to judge by the absence of protest resulting from its removal)...

well, i guess the lack of protest is because that old builtin video capture never worked reliably in the first place

by now i found some other video captures for linux that actually work quite well... together with kdenlive as a video editor it'll be pretty cool.

The built-in video capture was never really usable, even when it was working.

Linux folks use tools like RecordMyDesktop or Istanbul.
Mac folks tend to use iShowU
Windows folks use tools like FRAPS or Camtasia.
