not checked yet if that is happening in the LL client too, but if you remove a physical layer the view of people around you doesn't seem to get updated. Workaround is to have a physics layer that is 'static' , so instead of removing on layer switch to the 'non-physical' physics layer. ;D
This is not a bug, but the unavoidable drawback of a backward compatibility fix: viewers supporting physics wearables got more "visual parameters" (defined in avatar_lad.xml) than viewers not supporting them, and when those parameters are transmitted in totality to an old viewer, the latter rejects them all "en bloc", resulting in a failure to rez the avatar.
To work around this issue and ensure proper backward compatibility, the Cool VL Viewer (and most other TPVs) do not transmit the additional visual parameters (used in the Physics wearable) when Physics support is disabled (this is the case of all TPVs I know of), or when no Physics wearable is worn (this is specific to the Cool VL Viewer to increase compatibility even further: as long as you don't wear Physics on your avatar it will rez in everyone's viewer, and you still can enjoy others' Physics if you so wish by enabling Physics support). The drawback is that when you remove a Physics wearable, the corresponding visual parameters are not transmitted to their zeroed value (which only affects users of a Physics-enabled viewer around you when you take off the wearable).
Note that this compatibility fix is badly needed for OpenSim grids (where the use of deprecated viewers such as Hippo or Imprudence is legion).
You found one of the possible workarounds by yourself; another would be to TP away and back so that your avatar parameters are erased and re-downloaded from others' viewers.
I suppose that if LL breaks the compatibility with old viewers (they may well do it, if they actually shut down the old baked texture upload service on sim servers, after the migration to server-side baking), then I'll be able to disable this compatibility fix for SL sessions (keeping it only for OpenSim)...
